Head Coach

Al Arbour

"Radar"

4 Stanley Cups Hall of Fame 1996

Born: Sudbury, ON — November 1, 1932 • Islanders: 1973–1994

Al Arbour is one of the greatest coaches in NHL history. A four-time Stanley Cup winner as a player (Detroit 1954, Chicago 1961, Toronto 1962, 1964), he then guided the Islanders to four consecutive championships. Known for his calm demeanor, meticulous preparation, and fierce loyalty to his players, "Radar" (named for the M*A*S*H character due to his glasses) accumulated 782 regular season wins. He came out of retirement in November 2007 at age 75 to coach one final game — giving him exactly 1,500 career regular season games behind an NHL bench.

Al Arbour passed away on August 28, 2015, at the age of 82, at his home on Long Island — the island he had given so much of his life to. His banner hangs at UBS Arena alongside those of the players he coached to greatness. It reads simply: Al Arbour. No further explanation is needed.
